ANC: STATEMENT OF MINORITY LEADER DANILO SUAREZ
Last week a column in one of the broadsheets ran an article about the rampant smuggling of rice and other agricultural products in the country. This representation has always maintained that it is smuggling, and not the perennial typhoons that are presently dealing the biggest blow to our farmers. In a past media statement, I have also repeatedly sounded off against progressive smuggling of palm oil into the country which has been seriously hurting our coconut farmers. Losses due to smuggling during the terms of Presidents Joseph Estrada and Gloria M-Arroyo had annual figures at $3.1 billion and $3.8 billion yearly, respectively. In this administration's FIRST TWO YEARS in office, the estimated value of smuggling totaled an astronomical $39.2 BILLION, more than the $35.6 billion during Arroyo's entire NINE YEARS in office.
