PHILSTAR: Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago yesterday frowned on the move of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales. "I would think that it is unfortunate at this time because he is being asked to fight a battle at two fronts - first, in the impeachment where the penalty is removal from office and disqualification from public office, so he should be allowed first to defend himself on that front," Santiago said in a radio interview.

TRIBUNE: Ombudsman running after CJ complicates trial-Miriam - Ombudsman Conchita Carpio- Morales jumping into the fray on the accusations hurled at impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona is expected to further complicate, if not create a mess out of the ongoing trial against Corona, one of the senator-judges said yesterday. Sen. Miriam Defensor- Santiago made the assertion, citing the possibility of the Ombudsman proceeding with the case simultaneous with the impeach-men trial of the Senate, which is due to resume on May 7, when Congress returns for the remaining plenary sessions.

Corona received the order on April 23. Through his lawyer Ramon Esguerra, Corona denied having $10 million in the bank, saying the complaints were part of a "black progaganda" against him. He said the Ombudsman had no jurisdiction over the Chief Justice. Rico Paolo Quicho, another lawyer on Corona's defense team, said: "The timing is highly suspect.  The Chief Justice [will} continue to fight for what is right and will not waver in his commitment to protect [the] independence of the judiciary."

INQUIRER: Through his lawyer, Ramon Esguerra, Corona responded with a terse four-point reply: (1) I do not now P10M. It simply does not exist. (2) It's part of the black propaganda and mind-conditioning preparatory to the resumption of trial on May 7. (3) No different from the phoney LRA [land Registration Authority] list, phoney US property list, phoney surveys, phoney letters o the Inquirer editor, etc., etc. (4) The Ombudsman has no jurisdiction over the Chief Justice.
