INQUIRER: BOBI TIGLAO: Smuggling at its worst under Aquino, Wednesday
- Smuggling in the Philippines is at its worst under Pres Aquino's administration, with the smuggled value averaging $19.6 billion annually, an explosion from the comparable figures of $3.1 billion and 3.8 billion yearly during the terms of President Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, respectively. In Mr. Aquino's first two years in office, the value of smuggling totaled $39.2 billion, more than the $35.6 billion during Arroyo's nine years in office. UNEMPLOYMENT GREW in the third quarter, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) said in a new report, reversing a steep fall seen three months earlier. The latest rate of 29.4% - recorded in an August survey and up from May's 26.6% -- is equivalent to 11.7% jobless Filipinos. The government's official figure is 7.0%, or some 2.8 million unemployed, as of July.

INQUIRER: 'Sin tax' bill favors imports - Enrile
The sin tax bill being debated in Congress tends to favor imported cigarettes as it appears the proposed tax increases on tobacco products do not cover foreign brands, Sen Pres Juan Ponce Enrile said Wednesday. According to Enrile, the problem is a question of equity. "My impression is that the bill tends to favor the entry of foreign manufactured tobacco products to the detriment of local products that use material grown in the country," he said.
