The COMELEC has come to the President's rescue by saying that, because of his status as the highest official in the land, Aquino need not apply for an exemption. But Comelec's efforts may have actually made the situation worse because the election gun ban applies to all private citizens; last I heard, Aquino has not yet enlisted in the police of the military, and thus needs and exemption to carry a gun.

INQUIRER: MORE FAMILIES RATE SELVES POOR - SWS
Some 10.9 million households, or around one in every two families (54 percent), consider themselves "poor," up from the estimated 9.5 million households (47 percent) in August, according to a recent SWS survey. The results of the Fourth Quarter SWS Report, conducted from Dec. 8 to 11, also had 44 percent of households (8.9 million families) saying they were "food-poor," up from 35 percent (7.2 million families) in the last survey period.

The ralliers, who all came from Pampanga, called on Mrs. Arroyo's immediate release from detention. They claimed she is being "unduly detained for a crime which has no basis."Residents from Guagua, Pampanga had earlier filed motions for intervention so that they may intervene and be heard by  the high court on the Arroyo petition. They pointed out that the Office of the Ombudsman that found probable cause to charge Mrs. Arroyo before the Sandiganbayan had no authority to review the findings of the COA, which found no irregularity on  the usage of the subject funds.

The rallyists held placards in front of the immediate release of the former Pres from detention as they stressed the SC should immediately act on her petition since she is being which has no basis.

Hundreds of supporters of former Pres now Pamp Rep. Gloria M-Arroyo yesterday held a prayer rally in front of the SC to air their appeal for the dismissal of the plunder case filed against the former leader in connection with the alleged misuse of PCSO fund. With a large number coming from Arroyo's home province of Pampanga, the supporters said they decided to hold the prayer rally which they dubbed "prayer for enlightenment" in order to call on the high court on her petition to stop the proceedings of the case at the Sandiganbayan and dismiss the case.
PHILSTAR: SWS: MOST PINOY FAMILIES CONSIDER THEMSELVES POOR
Despite the decrease in self-rated hunger, more Filipinos still consider themselves "mahirap" or poor, the SWS said in its latest survey. The SWS poll, conducted from Dec. 8 to 11 last year, found 54 percent or about 10.9M families, claiming to be poor, up from August's 47 percent or an estimated 9.5M families. The latest figure was also higher than the 52 percent average for equivalent to 23.14M individuals as of 2009.
